Castor and Coconut Oil for Dry Scalp Patches

A thick blend of castor and coconut oil dabbed on dry, tight scalp patches before washing, to soften flakes and dryness.

Illustrated still life with coconut.

What to know about castor oil

Castor oil (arandi) is thick and sticky. Ayurveda uses it warm on stiff joints and dry skin; taken by mouth it is a strong laxative, so home use is mainly external.

Castor oil is very thick and moisturising. Mixed with coconut oil it becomes easier to spread and rinse, and it can soften dry, tight patches on the scalp.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp castor oil
  • 2 tsp coconut oil

How to prepare

  1. Warm both oils together slightly.

How to use

  • Dab on dry patches with fingertips and massage gently.
  • Leave 30 to 60 minutes, then shampoo twice. Once a week.

Helpful habits

  • Mix with a lighter oil like coconut so it spreads and washes out easily.

Precautions

  • Thick, silvery or bleeding patches may be psoriasis; see a dermatologist.
  • Do not take castor oil by mouth without a doctor, and never in pregnancy.
  • Patch-test behind the ear first; skip on broken or inflamed scalp.
  • Stop if you notice itching, rash, stomach upset or any other discomfort.
