The commonest causes are dandruff (seborrhoeic dermatitis), a dry scalp in winter, sweat and product build-up, head lice, and reactions to hair dye or fragranced shampoos. Scratching breaks the skin and sets up a cycle of more itching.

Ayurveda would see a hot, red, itchy scalp as pitta, and a dry, flaky, tight one as vata. Cooling aloe (kumari) and bitter neem suit pitta-type itch, while warm oil massage helps vata dryness. Identifying which pattern you have helps you choose the right remedy.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons fresh aloe vera gel (latex drained) or pure store-bought gel
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 5–6 neem leaves or 3–4 drops neem oil

How to prepare

  1. Warm the coconut oil with the neem leaves for 3–4 minutes on low heat, then cool and strain (or simply mix in neem oil).
  2. Keep the aloe gel ready in a clean bowl.

How to use

  • For a hot, itchy scalp, dab aloe gel onto the scalp with fingertips, leave for 20–30 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. Use two or three times a week.
  • For a dry, tight scalp, massage the neem–coconut oil gently an hour before washing, once or twice a week.
  • Wash with a mild, fragrance-free shampoo and lukewarm — not hot — water.

  • Check for lice and nits behind the ears and at the nape, especially in children.
  • If itching started after a new dye or shampoo, stop using it.
