Light moong khichdi as an early dinner

Moong dal, rice, cumin and ginger cook with a soft vegetable into a light khichdi, eaten earlier in the evening. It is dinner, not a blood-sugar treatment, and it does not replace diabetes medicine.

A bowl of soft yellow moong khichdi with cumin and ginger on a kitchen table, evening light, no people and no lettering.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

About light khichdi as an early dinner

Wash the moong dal and rice, then simmer them with cumin, ginger and a handful of chopped soft vegetable until the grains open and the bowl is soft. Use only a few drops of fat if you need any. Eat it in the early evening rather than very late.

A light early dinner is still a meal. Keep a modest bowl. Do not skip diabetes medicine because dinner was khichdi, and do not change a dose on your own.

Ingredients

  • A handful of moong dal
  • A small handful of rice
  • A pinch of cumin
  • A small piece of ginger
  • A handful of chopped soft vegetable

How to prepare

  1. Wash the moong dal and rice, and put them in a pot with cumin, chopped ginger and the vegetable.
  2. Simmer with water until soft and the grains have opened. Salt lightly at the end.

How to use

  • Eat a modest bowl earlier in the evening.
  • Stop at one comfortable bowl. Do not follow it with a sweet dessert.
  • If you still walk after dinner, do that only when your doctor has said walking is safe.

Helpful habits

  • Bottle gourd or another soft vegetable cooks in the same time as the rice and dal.
  • Add water if you want it lighter, rather than adding extra rice.

Precautions

  • Khichdi is a meal, not a treatment. This does not replace diabetes medicine and doses must not be changed.
  • A very late, very large bowl misses the point of an early light dinner. This does not replace diabetes medicine and doses must not be changed.
  • Do not change a dose because dinner was soft and early. This does not replace diabetes medicine and doses must not be changed.
