Rice water for hair growth: fermented rinse recipe, how often to use it and who should skip it
Rice water for hair growth is a kitchen classic — the cloudy water left after soaking rice is used as a hair rinse across Asia. It won't magically double your hair length, but it can make strands smoother, stronger and less prone to breakage. Here's how to make it, use it and avoid common mistakes.

Rice water for hair growth: what it can and can't do
Rice water contains starch, small amounts of amino acids, B vitamins and inositol, a compound that may help damaged hair repair and resist breakage. Less breakage means you retain more length, which is where most of the 'growth' benefit comes from. It doesn't make follicles grow hair faster.
In Ayurveda, rice (shali) is cooling and nourishing, and rice washing water (tandulodaka) is used in several classical preparations. For hair, it works as a gentle, conditioning rinse, particularly for dry or damaged hair.
Ingredients
- ½ cup uncooked rice (any kind), rinsed once to remove dirt
- 2 cups water
- A few drops of rosemary or a pinch of methi (optional)
How to prepare
- Soaked method: soak the rice in the water for 30 minutes, swirl and strain the cloudy water.
- Fermented method: leave the strained water at room temperature for 12–24 hours until slightly sour, then refrigerate. Dilute with an equal amount of plain water before use.
How to use
- After shampooing, pour rice water over the scalp and hair, massage and leave for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with plain water.
- Use once or twice a week; use it less often if hair starts to feel stiff or straw-like.
- Use within 3–4 days of making it.
Helpful habits
- Follow with a light oil or conditioner if your hair is low-porosity or tends to feel stiff.
- Rotate with other rinses (hibiscus, neem, rosemary) rather than using rice water daily.
Precautions
- Too much can cause 'protein overload' — dry, brittle hair. Cut back if this happens.
- Discard if it smells very foul or grows mould.
- People with seborrhoeic dermatitis or a very oily, flaky scalp may find the starch worsens dandruff — rinse thoroughly or avoid. Rice water is safe externally in pregnancy and for children, but patch test and stop if the scalp itches.
Frequently asked questions
Does rice water really help hair grow?
- It mainly strengthens and smooths strands so they break less, which helps you keep length. It doesn't make hair grow faster from the root.
Is fermented rice water better?
- Fermentation may slightly increase certain nutrients and lower pH, but it also smells stronger. Plain soaked rice water works well for most people.
Can I leave rice water in my hair overnight?
- It's better to rinse after 10–30 minutes. Leaving it on too long can make hair stiff and may irritate the scalp.
