A small sesame and jaggery bite on winter days

Roasted sesame seeds pressed with a little jaggery make one or two winter bites. They are a small sweet after a meal on cold days, not a packet of chikki to finish.

Til and gur, one or two pieces

Sesame and jaggery show up together at Makar Sankranti because both are winter foods. A small piece is the traditional bite, chewed slowly, not a large brittle bar every hour.

Ayurveda likes sesame in cold, dry weather for its oily quality. Keep the piece small if you watch sweets, and remember that a sweet does not replace a warm oil rub, easy movement, or a doctor when a joint is truly unwell.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • A small piece of jaggery, about a teaspoon when chopped
  • A dry pan for roasting

How to prepare

  1. Dry-roast the sesame seeds on a low flame until they smell nutty and start to pop.
  2. Stir the hot seeds with the chopped jaggery until they hold together, then pinch off one or two small bites.

How to use

  • Eat one bite after a meal on a cold day. A second small bite is the upper limit.
  • Chew well. Do not take them on a completely empty stomach if jaggery usually bothers you.
  • Store any extra in a dry tin and finish within a few days, still only one or two bites a day.

Helpful habits

  • White or black sesame both work. Roast them fresh so they are not bitter.
  • If the mix stays crumbly, it is still fine to eat with a spoon. Do not add more jaggery just to force a laddu.

Precautions

  • Stop at one or two pieces. This is not a licence to eat a box of sesame chikki.
  • Skip or keep it tiny if your doctor has asked you to limit sweets.
  • A sweet bite will not calm a hot swollen joint. Injury, fever, or locking of a joint needs a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

How many sesame jaggery bites in a day?

One or two small pieces. More jaggery and sesame only makes a heavier sweet.

Can children have this winter bite?

A small soft piece after a meal is a common winter sweet. It is still a sweet, so it is not an all-day snack. Avoid hard bites for very young children who might choke.

Does this replace a sesame oil massage?

No. Eating a bite and oiling a stiff joint are different habits. One does not stand in for the other.
