Cold Spoons on Closed Eyelids

Two clean spoons are cooled and rested on closed eyelids for a few minutes. Nothing goes into the eye. Lift them off if the skin hurts or the eye is injured.

Two clean steel spoons on a folded cloth beside an empty bowl, cooled and dry, with no liquid for the eyes.

Cool metal on closed lids, never in the eye

Two clean steel spoons can be left in the fridge until the metal feels cool, then rested on eyelids that stay shut. The spoons sit on the skin of the closed lids for a few minutes. They do not touch the eyeball. No water, rose water, milk, or oil is poured on the eye before, during, or after. This rest does not cure tiredness from illness, allergy, infection, or a sty.

Wash the spoons first. Do not use a spoon that held raw meat, pickle, or soap. Do not press. If the eye is red, painful, injured, or has something in it, do not put a spoon there at all. See a doctor. A chemical splash or a hit to the eye is urgent care, not a cold spoon.

Ingredients

  • 2 clean steel spoons
  • A clean fridge shelf or a bowl used only to chill the spoons
  • A clean dry cloth

How to prepare

  1. Wash the spoons with plain soap, rinse well, and dry them. Chill them until the metal is cool, not freezing.
  2. Sit down and close both eyes before a spoon comes near the face.

How to use

  • Rest one cool spoon on each closed eyelid for a few minutes. Do not press.
  • Nothing goes into the eye. Do not lift the lid, and do not add any liquid.
  • Take the spoons off if the skin stings, and do not repeat this through the day.

Helpful habits

  • Cool is enough. A spoon from the freezer can be too harsh on the skin.
  • Keep hair and fingers from rubbing the eyes while the spoons are on.

Precautions

  • Nothing goes into the eye. The spoons stay on closed lids only.
  • Do not use spoons on a red, painful, injured, or chemical-exposed eye. See a doctor.
  • This does not treat infection, allergy, a sty, or vision problems. Do not press the eye.
