Karela (bitter gourd) stir-fry for a balanced plate

Bitter taste (tikta rasa) is traditionally recommended in Ayurveda for people managing blood sugar. A simple karela sabzi is a tasty way to bring more bitter vegetables and fibre to the plate — as food, not medicine.

Illustrated still life with onion, coriander seeds, lemon.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium bitter gourds
  • 1 onion, sliced; 1 teaspoon oil
  • ½ teaspoon each cumin seeds, turmeric and coriander powder; salt to taste
  • A squeeze of lemon

How to prepare

  1. Scrape the rough skin lightly, slice thinly, rub with a little salt and leave for 15 minutes. Squeeze out the bitter juice and rinse.
  2. Heat oil, add cumin, then the onion, and cook until soft.
  3. Add the karela and spices, cover and cook on low heat until tender (10–12 minutes). Finish with lemon.

How to use

  • Enjoy as a side dish 2–3 times a week alongside dal, salad and whole grains.
  • Combine with regular exercise and your doctor's diet plan.

Precautions

  • Keep taking your prescribed medicine and monitor your sugar — karela may add to the effect of diabetes medicine.
  • Do not drink large amounts of raw karela juice without medical advice; it can cause stomach upset and low sugar.
  • Avoid bitter gourd in medicinal amounts during pregnancy.
