A Small Katori of Steamed Methi Sprouts

A small katori of fenugreek sprouts, steamed, eaten as food. It is not a blood-sugar medicine. In pregnancy, ask a doctor before you add it. It is not a handful of dry seeds.

A steel bowl of fresh green sprouts beside dishes of cumin and mustard seeds and half a lemon.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Sprouts as a small side, not a seed dose

Fenugreek seeds can be soaked until they just sprout, then steamed and eaten as a small katori with lemon and cumin. That is a side of food. It is not the same as swallowing spoonfuls of dry seed, and it is not a diabetes drug. Do not stack it on top of fenugreek capsules or a large seed dose.

In pregnancy, do not add methi sprouts unless your doctor has said that food amount is fine. Sprouts can cause gas. If they smell sour, throw them away. A low sugar, with shakiness or sweating, is a medical event: follow your doctor's plan. Keep prescribed medicine.

Ingredients

  • Two teaspoons of fenugreek seeds, sprouted
  • Water for soaking
  • Cumin and a squeeze of lemon

How to prepare

  1. Rinse the seeds and soak them in clean water until small white sprouts appear. Drain. If they smell sour, discard them.
  2. Steam the sprouts until just tender. Toss with a pinch of cumin and a little lemon. Fill one small katori, not a bowl heaped high.

How to use

  • Eat that katori with a meal.
  • Do not also take a spoon of dry methi seed the same day unless your doctor already set that.
  • Keep diabetes medicine as prescribed.

Helpful habits

  • Change the soak water if you keep them more than a day, and keep them cold.
  • A bitter taste is normal. Sour, slimy, or musty is not. Throw that batch out.

Precautions

  • Pregnancy: ask a doctor before adding methi sprouts.
  • Not a blood-sugar medicine, and not an extra seed dose.
  • Sour sprouts are spoiled. Do not eat them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat a large bowl of sprouts instead of my diabetes tablets?

No. A small katori is food. It does not replace tablets, insulin, or testing.

Is this safe in pregnancy?

Ask your doctor first. This page is not a pregnancy remedy, and methi is not something to add on your own then.

The soaked seeds smell sour. Can I still steam them?

No. Sour, slimy, or musty sprouts should be thrown away. Start again with a fresh teaspoon of seeds.
