A Warm Rock-Salt Rinse, Then Spit

A pinch of rock salt in a small cup of warm water. Rinse the mouth and spit. It is not for a child who might swallow it, and it is not a dental treatment.

A bowl of pink rock salt beside a glass of water and a spoon.

A pinch in a cup, and it leaves the mouth

Stir a pinch of rock salt into a small cup of warm water, rinse the mouth for a few seconds, and spit. Do not swallow the rinse. Do not use a spoon of salt. This can be a short clean feeling after a meal. It does not treat a cavity, an abscess, bleeding that happens every day, or a sore that stays.

Children who cannot spit reliably should not use it. Water that is hot enough to sting the lip is too hot. If the gums bleed every time you brush, the face swells, or a mouth sore lasts beyond two weeks, see a dentist. A pinch of salt is not a disinfectant for a dental infection.

Ingredients

  • A pinch of rock salt
  • A small cup of drinking water
  • Nothing else added

How to prepare

  1. Warm the water until it is comfortable, not hot.
  2. Stir in one pinch of rock salt until it dissolves.

How to use

  • Rinse and spit. Do not swallow.
  • Once is enough. Do not repeat with a stronger cup.
  • Brush and floss as you already should. This rinse does not replace them.

Helpful habits

  • If it tastes like seawater, you used too much salt. Throw it out and use a smaller pinch.
  • Rock salt and table salt are both salt. The pinch is what matters.

Precautions

  • Spit it out. Not for a child who may swallow it.
  • Not a treatment for toothache, daily bleeding, or a sore that lasts.
  • Hot water burns. Warm means comfortable on the lip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I swallow the salt water to clean the stomach too?

No. Spit it out. This rinse is for the mouth only, and a salty swallow is not a cleanse.

Will a strong salt rinse heal a cavity?

No. A pinch is a rinse, not a filling and not an antibiotic. Tooth pain needs a dentist.

Can my toddler swish this?

No, not if the child may swallow it. Skip the rinse until spitting is reliable.
