A cholesterol-friendly Indian kitchen: oats, flaxseed, garlic and smarter cooking

High cholesterol is common in Indian families, often alongside diabetes and BP. Small kitchen changes — more fibre from oats, dal and vegetables, a spoon of flaxseed, less deep-frying and bakery food — can support the treatment your doctor recommends.

Illustrated still life with flaxseeds, cloves, garlic.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda associates the build-up of fatty deposits with kapha and meda (fat tissue), and with ama — incompletely digested residue from heavy, oily food and inactivity. The traditional response is lighter food, pungent and bitter spices, and regular exercise. Modern nutrition agrees on soluble fibre, less saturated and trans fat, and plenty of vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon roasted, ground flaxseed (alsi) daily
  • Rolled oats or daliya for breakfast a few times a week
  • 1–2 garlic cloves in daily cooking
  • Plenty of vegetables, dals, sprouts and whole grains

How to prepare

  1. Dry-roast flaxseed until it crackles, cool and grind; store in an airtight jar for up to two weeks.
  2. Cook oats or daliya with vegetables as a savoury upma or khichdi, or with milk and fruit (no added sugar).

How to use

  • Sprinkle ground flaxseed on dal, curd, salad or into roti dough.
  • Choose cooking methods like steaming, sautéing, pressure cooking and tandoor over deep frying.
  • Walk or exercise 30–45 minutes most days.

Helpful habits

  • Limit vanaspati, reused frying oil, bakery items, namkeen and processed meats.
  • Use a mix of cooking oils in small quantities (see our note on ghee and oils).
  • Get a lipid profile as your doctor advises, along with sugar and BP checks.

Precautions

  • Continue cholesterol medicines (like statins) exactly as prescribed; don't stop them because of dietary changes.
  • Flaxseed needs plenty of water and may cause bloating at first; take it 2 hours apart from medicines. Garlic in large amounts may increase bleeding risk with blood thinners.
  • Very high cholesterol at a young age or a family history of early heart attacks needs specialist evaluation.
