Coconut Milk on Dry Lengths, Not the Scalp
A few spoons of thick coconut milk smoothed on dry lengths for about fifteen minutes, then shampooed out. Do not pile it on the scalp. It is not a hair-growth medicine.

Lengths only, then a proper wash
Shake a fresh coconut's thick milk, or use unsweetened thick coconut milk with no added sugar. Smooth a few spoons on the dry lengths. Leave it for about fifteen minutes and wash it out with your usual mild shampoo. Piling it on the scalp makes hair greasy and can itch. This does not regrow hair and does not treat dandruff as a drug.
If coconut has irritated your skin, skip it. Keep it out of the eyes. Sweetened tinned milk, with sugar or stabilisers you do not want on hair, is not this recipe. A flaky, painful scalp needs a doctor, not a heavier coat of milk.
Ingredients
- A few spoons of thick unsweetened coconut milk
- No sugar
- Mild shampoo to wash it out
How to prepare
- If you crack a coconut, use the thick milk. Strain out bits of shell.
- If it is thin, do not boil it down for hours. A few spoons of thick milk are enough.
How to use
- Smooth it on the lengths for about fifteen minutes.
- Wash it out the same sitting. Do not sleep in it.
- Do not pack it onto the scalp.
Helpful habits
- Too much milk mats the lengths. Stop while you can still see hair.
- Rinse until the water runs clear, or the hair smells sour the next day.
Precautions
- Lengths, not a scalp pack.
- Unsweetened. Out of the eyes.
- Not a growth or dandruff drug. A painful or suddenly patchy scalp needs a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave coconut milk on the scalp overnight?
- No. Fifteen minutes on the lengths, then wash. Overnight on the scalp is greasier than this page and still not a growth treatment.
Will it cure dandruff?
- No. It is a short conditioner for dry lengths. A painful, flaky scalp needs a doctor if it does not settle.
Can I use sweet tinned coconut milk?
- No. Sugar and thick stabilisers do not belong on the hair. Use unsweetened thick milk.
