Almond oil, cool compresses and sleep for dark circles

Dark circles are rarely just a skin problem — sleep, screens, allergies and genes all play a part. A nightly almond oil massage and a cool morning compress can soften their look while you fix the habits behind them.

The Ayurvedic view

The skin under the eyes is the thinnest on the face, so tiredness, dehydration and fluid retention show there first. Ayurveda would point to vata (dryness, late nights, overwork) and pitta (screen strain, heat). A little warm oil nourishes and softens; cool compresses tighten and de-puff. Neither changes the colour overnight, but used consistently they make the eyes look fresher.

Ingredients

  • 2–3 drops sweet almond oil (badam rogan) or pure ghee
  • 2 slices of chilled cucumber or potato, or two cotton pads dipped in cold rose water

How to prepare

  1. Warm the oil drops between your fingertips.
  2. Chill the cucumber, potato or rose-water pads for 10 minutes.

How to use

  • At night, pat the oil gently under the eyes with the ring finger, moving from the inner to the outer corner, for a minute. Don't rub or pull.
  • In the morning, rest the chilled slices or pads on closed eyes for 10 minutes.
  • Continue for at least 4–6 weeks.

Helpful habits

  • Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep at a regular time — this matters more than any cream.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule with screens: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Drink enough water, reduce late-night salty snacks and treat nasal allergies.
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors.

Precautions

  • Keep oil out of the eyes; skip almond oil if you have a nut allergy.
  • Use a clean slice each time and wash hands first to avoid eye infections.
  • Sudden dark circles with fatigue, breathlessness or pale skin may point to anaemia or other health issues — get a check-up.
