A pinch of hing in warm water for bloating

Asafoetida (hing) is the Indian kitchen's answer to a tight, gassy belly. A tiny pinch dissolved in warm water after a heavy meal is one of the quickest home measures for bloating.

Illustrated still life with rock salt.

The Ayurvedic view

Hing is a dried resin with a strong smell that mellows beautifully in hot oil — which is why it goes into so many dals and bean dishes. Ayurveda considers it hot and sharp, and uses it to move trapped vata (gas) and kindle a sluggish digestive fire. Traditional cooks add it specifically to foods known to cause wind, such as rajma, chana and urad dal.

Bloating usually comes from eating too fast, too late or too much, from heavy combinations, fizzy drinks, or from beans and cabbage without warming spices.

Ingredients

  • A small pinch (less than ⅛ teaspoon) of good-quality hing
  • 1 cup warm water
  • A pinch of rock salt or black salt (optional)

How to prepare

  1. Dissolve the hing and salt in warm water and stir well — compounded hing may leave a little flour at the bottom.

How to use

  • Sip slowly after a heavy meal or when the belly feels tight, up to twice a day.
  • In cooking, add a pinch of hing to hot ghee or oil when tempering dals, beans and vegetables like cabbage and cauliflower.

Helpful habits

  • Eat slowly and chew well; gulping food means gulping air.
  • Soak beans and chickpeas overnight and cook them thoroughly with hing, ginger and cumin.
  • Avoid fizzy drinks and chewing gum when bloated.
  • A gentle walk or lying on the left side for a few minutes can help gas pass.

Precautions

  • Use only a pinch — too much can cause burning, loose stools or a headache.
  • Avoid medicinal use during pregnancy and for babies unless advised; do not put hing in an infant's mouth.
  • People with acidity, ulcers or bleeding disorders should use it sparingly and only in cooking.
  • Commercial hing is often mixed with wheat flour — people with coeliac disease should choose a gluten-free brand.
  • Persistent bloating, bloating with weight loss, or pain that wakes you at night needs a medical check-up.
