Ginger–lemon appetiser before meals

A tiny bite of fresh ginger with lemon and rock salt, taken before lunch, is a classic way to wake up a sluggish appetite and support agni (digestive fire).

Fresh ginger slices, lemons and a small bowl of rock salt on a sunlit kitchen counter.

Ingredients

  • A thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger
  • A few drops of lemon juice
  • A pinch of rock salt (sendha namak)

How to prepare

  1. Peel the ginger and cut it into thin slices or fine matchsticks.
  2. Sprinkle the lemon juice and rock salt over the slices and mix.
  3. Keep in a small glass jar in the fridge for up to 2–3 days.

How to use

  • Chew 1–2 thin slices slowly about 10–15 minutes before your main meal.
  • Best before lunch, when digestion is naturally strongest.

Precautions

  • Skip it if you have acidity, heartburn, mouth ulcers or a stomach ulcer — ginger is heating.
  • Talk to your doctor first if you take blood-thinning medicine or have gallstones.
  • If loss of appetite lasts more than a week or comes with weight loss, see a doctor.
