Home remedies for sour burps: saunf–mishri, cold milk sips and lighter dinners

That sour, burning taste rising into the throat after a meal is what most of us call khatti dakar. These home remedies for sour burps — saunf with mishri, a few sips of cool milk or coconut water, and lighter, earlier dinners — are traditionally used to calm excess acid and make the after-meal hours more comfortable.

Illustrated still life with mishri crystals, coconut, coriander seeds, fennel seeds.

Home remedies for sour burps: what causes khatti dakar

Sour burps happen when stomach acid and gas push up into the food pipe. Spicy, oily or sour food, tea or coffee on an empty stomach, overeating, smoking, alcohol, stress and lying down soon after eating are common triggers. Frequent episodes may be part of acid reflux (GERD).

In Ayurveda, sour belching (amla udgara) is a classic sign of aggravated pitta. Sweet, cooling and bitter tastes — fennel, mishri, amla, coriander, coconut water — are traditionally used to pacify it.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon saunf and ½ teaspoon mishri (rock sugar)
  • Half a cup of cold, plain milk (if it suits you)
  • A glass of tender coconut water
  • A few fresh mint or coriander leaves

How to prepare

  1. Crush saunf and mishri lightly together and keep in a small jar.

How to use

  • Chew ½–1 teaspoon of the saunf–mishri mix slowly after meals.
  • When sour burps start, sip a few mouthfuls of cold milk or coconut water.
  • Chew a few mint or coriander leaves, or drink coriander-seed water (soaked overnight) in the morning.

Helpful habits

  • Eat smaller meals, finish dinner 2–3 hours before bed and raise the head end of the bed slightly.
  • Cut down on pickles, deep-fried snacks, very spicy gravies, tea on an empty stomach and carbonated drinks.
  • Don't smoke; manage stress with a short walk or breathing practice.

Precautions

  • Cold milk may worsen symptoms in some people or cause gas if you're lactose intolerant; stop if it doesn't help.
  • People with diabetes should limit mishri and count it in their daily sugar.
  • Pregnant women often get sour burps; small frequent meals help, and antacids should be taken only as advised by a doctor. Children with frequent sour burps or vomiting should be checked by a paediatrician.
  • See a doctor if you have sour burps most days, trouble swallowing, chest pain, vomiting, black stools or weight loss. Don't stop prescribed acid medicines without advice.
