Neem Leaves and Blood Sugar: What to Know

Chewing neem leaves for diabetes is a common tradition. What is known, safe amounts, and why it is not for long daily courses.

Illustrated still life with neem leaves.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

The Ayurvedic view of neem

Neem is the bitter tree whose leaves, twigs and oil appear in Indian homes for skin, scalp and teeth. It is mostly used on the outside; eating neem is kept to small, occasional amounts.

Neem is bitter, and Ayurveda links bitter taste (tikta rasa) with balancing kapha and prameha. Animal studies show sugar-lowering effects, but human data is thin. Large or long-term internal use of neem can upset the stomach and, rarely, affect the liver; neem oil should never be swallowed.

A few tender leaves in season, as in the traditional spring custom, is very different from daily neem capsules.
