Nirgundi leaf warm compress for a stiff knee
Nirgundi leaves, warmed and tied in a cloth, are a village compress for a knee that feels stiff after cold or long sitting. The bundle stays on the skin for a few minutes and is never eaten.

A warm nirgundi cloth for a stiff knee
A knee can feel tight on a cold morning or after hours at a desk. Many homes warm a handful of nirgundi leaves and hold them on the joint before the evening oil rub.
Ayurveda links this kind of stiffness with vata and uses nirgundi on the skin, not as a drink. The compress is only comfort for a simple stiff knee. A hot, swollen or injured joint needs a doctor.
Ingredients
- A handful of fresh nirgundi leaves, washed
- A clean cotton cloth
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil to moisten the leaves
How to prepare
- Bruise the nirgundi leaves lightly, sprinkle the sesame oil, and tie them into a loose cloth bundle.
- Warm the bundle over a covered pot of hot water until it feels pleasant on the inner wrist, not hot.
How to use
- Sit with the knee supported and rest the warm bundle on the stiff part for 5 to 8 minutes.
- If it cools, warm it once more and place it again. Lift it while the skin still looks calm.
- Use it on the outside of the knee only, once on a stiff day, then keep the leaf bundle aside.
Helpful habits
- A short easy walk earlier in the day often makes the evening compress feel more settling.
- Keep a dry cloth nearby so you can lift the bundle the moment the skin turns pink.
Precautions
- This compress is external only. Do not eat the warmed leaves or let oil drip into the eyes.
- Do not use it on broken skin, a rash, or a knee that is hot and swollen after a twist or fall.
- Stop if the skin burns or itches. Fever, a locked knee, or pain that wakes you needs a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use dried nirgundi leaves for the compress?
- Fresh leaves warm more evenly. If you only have dried leaves, moisten them with a few drops of sesame oil and warm water before tying the cloth.
How long should the nirgundi bundle stay on the knee?
- A few minutes is enough. Do not sleep with it in place, and lift it as soon as the skin feels too warm.
Is a leaf compress enough when the knee is swollen?
- No. This is only a warm cloth for ordinary stiffness. A swollen, red or injured knee should be seen by a doctor.
