One Small Piece of Amla Murabba

One small piece of amla simmered with a little jaggery. Eat one piece, not the jar. It is a sweet. It does not work as an immunity medicine, and the sugar counts.

An amla murabba piece in syrup on a plate, beside a jar of murabba and a spoon.

One piece, because murabba is a sweet

Fresh amla can be pricked and simmered with a small amount of jaggery until it is soft, then one piece eaten. The rest waits. Murabba is a preserve, which means sugar. One piece is a bite after a meal, not a morning medicine and not a way to 'build immunity'. It does not prevent colds or replace food and sleep.

People limiting sugar, including many with diabetes, may want to skip the piece. Do not give sticky murabba to small children; it can choke and it is a sweet. Jaggery is not honey, but this page is still not for babies. A mouldy jar should be thrown out, not scraped.

Ingredients

  • Two or three fresh amlas for a tiny batch
  • A small amount of jaggery, enough to glaze, not to drown them
  • Water

How to prepare

  1. Wash and prick the amlas. Simmer in a little water with jaggery until just soft.
  2. Cool. Eat one piece. Keep the rest covered in the fridge and finish it within a few days, or throw it out.

How to use

  • One piece is the serving.
  • Do not eat the batch because you made it.
  • Count it as a sweet if you are limiting sugar.

Helpful habits

  • If the syrup is thin, you do not need to boil it down into a hard candy.
  • A fridge smell that is yeasty means the batch is done. Discard it.

Precautions

  • It is a sweet. One piece, not a jar.
  • Not an immunity or cold medicine.
  • Not for babies. Sticky pieces can choke a small child. Skip if you are limiting sugar.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat the whole jar in cold season?

No. One piece is the serving. The rest is sugar sitting in a jar, not a course of medicine.

Is jaggery-free amla the same page?

A plain amla wedge is a different food. This page is the sweet piece, and the limit is what makes it honest.

Will daily murabba stop me catching colds?

No. It will not. A cold with hard breathing, a long fever, or chest pain needs a doctor.
