One Spoon of Panjiri After Delivery

A spoonful of whole-wheat, ghee, dry-fruit and gond panjiri as a traditional recovery food after the doctor's go-ahead. Rich, so small.

A steel bowl of crumbly panjiri topped with sliced nuts, with mishri, ghee and scattered nuts.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

A rich recovery food, in small spoons

Panjiri is a traditional North Indian mixture of roasted whole-wheat flour, ghee, nuts, seeds and often edible gum (gond), given to new mothers. It is calorie-dense and warming, so a small spoon is plenty. It is a food and not a treatment for weakness, back pain or milk supply.

Start only after your doctor says normal food is fine, and in small amounts, since it is heavy and can cause loose stools or acidity. Skip it if you have diabetes, gestational diabetes history, nut allergy or gallbladder problems, and ask your doctor. A baby with a rash or loose stools after you eat nuts needs a paediatrician.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon ready panjiri (whole-wheat flour, ghee, almonds, makhana, gond)

  1. Roast the flour in ghee, add chopped nuts and fried gond, and mix with a little sugar or jaggery.
  2. Store in a clean, dry jar.

  • Increase only if it suits you and your doctor agrees.
