Warm Sesame Oil on a Child's Soles

A few drops of sesame oil, warmed and tested on your wrist, rubbed on the soles of a child over one. It stays on the skin. It does not treat fever.

A steel bowl of oil with a spoon, a dish of sesame seeds, a folded towel and tiny socks.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Oil on the soles only, and only just warm

A few drops of sesame oil warmed in a spoon, then tested on the inside of an adult wrist, can be rubbed on the soles of a child over one year. The oil must feel barely warm, never hot. It is an external bedtime habit. It does not bring a fever down, does not treat a cough, and does not go in the mouth, the eyes, or on broken skin.

Do not use it on a rash, a cut, or a burn. Do not use mustard oil on a child's skin for this page. If the child is younger than one, skip it. A fever in a small child, a rash that spreads, unusual sleepiness, or hard breathing needs a doctor, not more oil.

Ingredients

  • A few drops of sesame oil
  • A spoon to warm it
  • A clean adult wrist to test the heat

How to prepare

  1. Warm the oil in a spoon over warm water, not in a smoking pan.
  2. Test it on the inside of your wrist. If it feels hot, wait. It should feel barely warm.

How to use

  • Rub a few drops on the soles of a child over one.
  • Keep the oil out of the eyes, mouth, and any broken skin.
  • Wash your hands. Do not offer the oil as a drink.

Helpful habits

  • One teaspoon is already more than enough for two small soles.
  • If the child dislikes the feeling, stop. It is not a treatment you must finish.

Precautions

  • External only. Not a fever or cough treatment.
  • Not on a rash, cut, or burn, and not for a baby under one.
  • Hot oil burns. Wrist-test every time.

Frequently asked questions

Will sole oil bring a child's fever down?

No. Oil on the feet does not treat fever. A fever in a small child needs a doctor's advice, not more oil.

Can the child drink the leftover oil?

No. This oil is for the skin of the soles only. Do not give it as a drink.

The oil felt hot on my wrist. Should I rub it on quickly?

No. Wait until it is barely warm. Hot oil burns a child's skin.
