Very Soft Dalia for a Child on Solids

Dalia cooked until it mashes, with a few drops of ghee and no honey. Only for a child who already eats solids. It is not medicine.

A bowl of warm porridge with a pool of ghee, beside a small bowl of grain and a spoon.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Soft enough to mash, and no honey

Broken wheat simmered in plenty of water until a grain mashes between clean fingers can be a plain bowl for a child already eating solids. A few drops of ghee may go on top. No honey, no sugar, and no whole nuts. It does not treat fever, poor appetite, or low weight.

This is wheat. If the child has been told to avoid wheat, do not give it. Babies not yet on solids should not get this bowl. A child who is limp, not drinking, vomiting often, or breathing hard needs a doctor, not a thicker porridge. Cool it until warm before you offer it.

Ingredients

  • A small handful of broken wheat
  • Water
  • A few drops of ghee
  • No honey

How to prepare

  1. Simmer the dalia in plenty of water until it is completely soft and mashable.
  2. Stir in a few drops of ghee if you use ghee. Cool until warm. Add no honey or sugar.

How to use

  • Offer a small amount to a child who already eats similar solids.
  • Mash any lump.
  • Keep the rest for the same day in the fridge, reheated until hot, then cooled to warm.

Helpful habits

  • Thin it with hot water if it turns stiff. Do not thin it with sweet milk drinks.
  • A fresh small batch is safer than a large pot left on the stove.

Precautions

  • No honey, especially not under one year.
  • Wheat: do not give it if wheat is to be avoided.
  • Not a treatment for illness. A limp, breathless, or repeatedly vomiting child needs a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add honey for taste?

No. No honey in this bowl, and never for a child under one.

Will daily dalia make a thin child gain weight?

No. This is one soft food, not a treatment for poor growth. Weight that worries you needs a doctor.

The child is not on solids yet. Can I give the cooking water?

No. This page is for a child already eating solids. Cooking water is not a feed for a young baby.
