Benefits of chyawanprash: how this amla-based rasayana supports immunity and how to take it

Chyawanprash is a thick, sweet-sour herbal jam made from amla and dozens of herbs cooked with ghee, honey and sugar or jaggery. The main benefits of chyawanprash, as described in Ayurveda, are support for immunity, respiratory strength, energy and healthy ageing — which is why many Indian families take a spoon every winter morning.

Illustrated still life with honey, amla, jaggery.

Benefits of chyawanprash: the rasayana tradition

Chyawanprash is named after the sage Chyavana, who according to legend regained his youth with this formula. It is a classic rasayana — a rejuvenating tonic meant to nourish all tissues. Amla, its base, is a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants. Other common herbs include ashwagandha, pippali, guduchi, shatavari, dashmool, cardamom and cinnamon, bound with ghee and honey.

Small studies suggest chyawanprash may support immune markers and reduce the frequency of minor respiratory infections, but it is a supportive food, not a medicine.

Ingredients

  • 1–2 teaspoons chyawanprash (from a trusted brand)
  • A cup of warm milk or water

How to prepare

  1. Take the chyawanprash directly from a dry spoon, or stir it into warm (not boiling) milk.

How to use

  • Adults: 1–2 teaspoons once a day, ideally in the morning on a light stomach.
  • Children over 5: ½–1 teaspoon, if the paediatrician agrees.
  • Use through winter or during recovery; take breaks as you would with any tonic.
  • Follow with a glass of warm milk if it suits your digestion.

Helpful habits

  • Check labels for sugar content and choose sugar-free versions if needed.
  • Keep the jar closed, dry and away from heat.
  • Combine with sleep, exercise and a balanced diet — no tonic replaces them.

Precautions

  • Chyawanprash contains sugar or jaggery and honey — people with diabetes should ask their doctor and continue prescribed treatment.
  • In pregnancy and breastfeeding, take it only with your doctor's approval. Don't give to children under 5 without advice (honey is unsafe under 1 year).
  • If you take regular medicines, ask your doctor — some herbs in it may interact.
  • Stop if you get acidity, loose stools or rashes, and see a doctor for frequent infections or ongoing fatigue.
