Homemade Bhringraj and Amla Oil for Weekly Champi
Coconut oil slowly warmed with bhringraj and amla powder, strained, and used for a relaxing weekly head massage. Wash out within a few hours.

Bhringraj in everyday Indian homes
Bhringraj (Eclipta alba), called the king of hair, is a small wetland herb used in hair oils and packs. Evidence in people is limited; oiling mainly helps with dryness and scalp comfort.
Bhringraj and amla are the two classic hair herbs of Ayurveda. Infusing them in coconut oil at home gives a fragrant, dark oil for champi. Oiling mainly reduces dryness and breakage; it does not change genetics.
Ingredients
- 200 ml coconut oil
- 1 tbsp bhringraj powder
- 1 tbsp amla powder
How to prepare
- Heat the oil on the lowest flame; stir in the powders.
- Keep on very low heat for 10 to 15 minutes without letting it smoke; cool, strain through muslin and bottle.
How to use
- Warm 2 tsp and massage into the scalp with fingertips for five minutes.
- Leave for one to two hours, then wash with a mild shampoo. Once a week.
Helpful habits
- Bhringraj powder is dark green; brown, dusty powder is old.
Precautions
- Do not oil an inflamed, flaking or infected scalp.
- Wash out within a few hours if your scalp gets oily or itchy.
- Patch-test behind the ear first; skip on broken or inflamed scalp.
- A home remedy, not a treatment. See a doctor if symptoms last more than a few days or get worse.
Frequently asked questions
Should I leave the oil overnight?
- An hour or two is enough; overnight oil can clog the scalp in some people.
How long does the oil keep?
- About two months in a dry, dark bottle.
Does bhringraj regrow hair?
- No home remedy reliably regrows hair; see a doctor for sudden or patchy loss.
