A small cup of dry ginger tea on stiff mornings

A small cup of dry ginger tea, with a little jaggery, is a cold-morning sip for days when the body feels stiff on waking. It is one mild cup, not a strong decoction to drink all day.

Sonth tea when the morning feels stiff

Dry ginger, or sonth, is the dried root used in winter kitchens. A small pinch simmered in water makes a warming cup when fingers and knees feel slow on a cold morning.

Ayurveda sees that morning stiffness as a vata pattern and uses warmth, oil and easy movement around it. The tea is only a sip beside those habits. It is not for someone who gets burning in the stomach from ginger, and it is not a painkiller.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 teaspoon dry ginger powder, or a few slices of dry ginger
  • 1 cup water
  • A small piece of jaggery

How to prepare

  1. Simmer the dry ginger in the water for 5 minutes on a low flame.
  2. Strain into a cup and stir in just enough jaggery to take the edge off.

How to use

  • Sip one small warm cup in the morning with stiffness, after a few bites of breakfast if your stomach is empty-sensitive.
  • Sit upright and drink it slowly rather than boiling-hot.
  • Keep it to one cup. Do not repeat strong sonth tea through the afternoon.

Helpful habits

  • Pair the cup with a few minutes of easy joint movement, such as opening and closing the hands.
  • If the taste is too sharp, the next cup can be weaker, not larger.

Precautions

  • Skip dry ginger tea if it gives you acidity, mouth ulcers, or a burning stomach.
  • Use very little jaggery. This cup is not a sweet drink to refill.
  • Stiffness with swollen hot joints, fever, or sudden inability to bear weight needs a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Is dry ginger the same as fresh ginger?

Dry ginger is the dried root and tastes sharper. This cup uses a small amount of dry ginger, not a large piece of fresh ginger.

Can I drink three cups for stronger relief?

No. One small mild cup is the idea. More is not better and can upset the stomach.

Should I add milk?

This version is water, dry ginger and a little jaggery. Milk is not part of the cup.
