Hair fall due to thyroid problems is common — both an underactive and an overactive thyroid can thin the hair all over the scalp. Understanding hair fall due to thyroid and how to support regrowth

Thyroid hormones regulate the hair growth cycle. When levels are too low (hypothyroidism) or too high (hyperthyroidism), more hairs move into the shedding phase, and hair may become dry, brittle or thin. It often takes three to six months after levels normalise for regrowth to become visible. Iron deficiency, which often accompanies thyroid disease, can also worsen hair fall.

Ayurveda would look at digestion (agni) and tissue nourishment, and it recommends regular meals, warm cooked food and oil massage. These are supportive measures; thyroid disorders need medical management.

Ingredients

  • Iodised salt (in normal amounts) and protein at each meal
  • Iron and zinc sources: dals, greens, pumpkin seeds, eggs or paneer
  • Selenium sources: 1–2 Brazil nuts or a few sunflower seeds, eggs, mushrooms
  • Warm coconut or sesame oil for a weekly scalp massage

How to prepare

  1. Plan simple, balanced meals: dal or paneer, a green vegetable, whole grain roti or rice, and curd.
  2. Warm the oil slightly for the massage.

How to use

  • Take thyroid medicine exactly as prescribed, usually on an empty stomach, and keep calcium, iron supplements, soy and coffee at least 4 hours or as advised apart from levothyroxine.
  • Massage warm oil into the scalp once or twice a week and wash with a mild shampoo.
  • Recheck thyroid levels as your doctor advises and discuss iron and vitamin D tests.

Helpful habits

  • Avoid harsh treatments like rebonding or bleaching while hair is shedding.
  • Cooked cabbage-family vegetables are fine in normal amounts; there's no need to avoid them.
  • Keep a gentle exercise routine and good sleep to help energy and weight.

  • Continue prescribed thyroid treatment and consult your doctor before adding any herb or supplement.
  • Ashwagandha, kelp, iodine tablets and 'thyroid support' supplements can alter thyroid levels — never take them without medical advice.
