Home remedies for dry eyes: warm compress, blinking breaks and omega-rich food

Gritty, dry eyes that feel tired by evening are common with screens, air-conditioning and dusty air. These home remedies for dry eyes use a warm compress to loosen the oil glands of the lids, regular blinking breaks and foods with healthy fats that support a stable tear film.

Why eyes feel dry

We blink far less while staring at screens, so tears evaporate faster. Fans, AC, dust, contact lenses, age, hormonal changes and some medicines add to it. The oil glands along the eyelid edges can also get blocked, making tears evaporate quickly.

Ayurveda links dry, burning eyes with vata and pitta and traditionally advises rest for the eyes, cooling measures and ghee in the diet.

Ingredients

  • A clean soft cloth and a bowl of warm (not hot) water
  • 1 tablespoon roasted flaxseed powder or a few walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon ghee with meals
  • Water through the day

How to prepare

  1. Dip the cloth in warm water, wring it out and test the warmth on your wrist.
  2. Keep roasted flaxseed powder in a jar to sprinkle on dal, curd or roti dough.

How to use

  • Place the warm cloth over closed eyes for 5–8 minutes, once or twice a day, re-warming as needed.
  • Follow 20-20-20 at screens: every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for 20 seconds and blink fully 10 times.
  • Add flaxseed or walnuts and a spoon of ghee to your daily meals.

Helpful habits

  • Keep the screen slightly below eye level and away from direct AC air.
  • Sleep 7–8 hours; tired eyes feel drier.
  • Wear sunglasses on dusty, windy days.

Precautions

  • Do not put ghee, oil, honey or rose water inside the eyes unless an eye doctor has advised it.
  • See an eye doctor if dryness comes with pain, redness, blurred vision or light sensitivity, or lasts more than two weeks.
  • Contact lens users should remove lenses and seek help if eyes become red or painful.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best home remedy for dry eyes?

A warm compress, blinking breaks and fewer hours of uninterrupted screen time help most people. Lubricating eye drops from a pharmacist can be added if needed.

Can drinking more water help dry eyes?

Staying hydrated supports the body's tear production, but on its own it rarely fixes dry eyes caused by screens or blocked lid glands.

Are dry eyes serious?

Usually not, but long-lasting dry eye can damage the eye's surface. Get it checked if home care does not help.
