Home remedies for burning eyes: cucumber, cool compress and a ghee foot rub
Eyes that sting and burn after a long day, a hot afternoon or hours on a phone need cooling and rest. These home remedies for burning eyes use chilled cucumber, cool compresses and the traditional ghee foot massage at bedtime, along with habits that reduce strain.

Why eyes burn
Dry eyes, screen strain, heat, smoke, pollution, chlorine in pools, lack of sleep and allergies are common causes of a burning feeling. A chemical splash or injury is different and needs emergency care.
Ayurveda sees burning eyes as excess pitta and traditionally cools the eyes through the feet, with padabhyanga (foot massage with ghee or oil) at bedtime.
Ingredients
- 1 chilled cucumber
- Cotton pads and a bowl of cold clean water
- 1 teaspoon ghee for the soles of the feet
- Cooling drinks: coconut water, buttermilk, plain water
How to prepare
- Slice the cucumber into thick rounds and keep them in the fridge.
- Warm the ghee slightly between your palms.
How to use
- Rest chilled cucumber slices or cold cotton pads on closed eyes for 10 minutes, twice a day.
- At bedtime, massage the ghee into the soles of your feet for 5 minutes and wear old socks.
- Take a 5-minute eye break every hour of screen use.
Helpful habits
- Wear sunglasses in harsh sun and goggles in swimming pools.
- Drink enough water and cut down on very spicy, fried food in hot weather.
- Turn down screen brightness and use night mode after sunset.
Precautions
- Rinse immediately with plenty of clean water and go to a doctor if any chemical, lime (chuna) or cleaning liquid enters the eye.
- Do not put cucumber juice, ghee or rose water inside the eye.
- See a doctor if burning comes with pain, redness, discharge, blurred vision or lasts more than a few days.
