Home remedies for muscle pain after workout: warm baths, gentle movement and protein

Sore, stiff muscles a day or two after a new workout, a long trek or a dance session are known as DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). These home remedies for muscle pain after workout — light movement, a warm bath with rock salt, a sesame-oil massage, enough water and a protein-rich meal — help your body recover so you can get back to exercise.

Illustrated still life with sesame seeds, rock salt, coconut.

Home remedies for muscle pain after workout: why muscles ache

When you exercise harder or differently than usual, tiny strains in the muscle fibres cause inflammation and soreness that peak 24–72 hours later. It's a normal part of getting stronger and usually settles in a few days. Sharp pain during exercise, swelling or bruising suggests an injury instead.

Ayurveda recommends exercising to about half your capacity (ardha shakti vyayama), followed by abhyanga (oil massage) and a warm bath to calm vata and ease the body.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons warm sesame oil
  • ½ cup rock salt (or Epsom salt) for a bath or foot soak
  • Water, buttermilk or coconut water
  • Protein: dal, paneer, eggs, curd, sprouts

How to prepare

  1. Dissolve the salt in a bucket or tub of comfortably warm water.

How to use

  • Keep moving gently: a 15–20 minute walk, easy cycling or light stretching the next day.
  • Soak in or pour warm salted water over sore muscles for 15 minutes.
  • Massage sore areas with warm sesame oil, using long strokes towards the heart.
  • Drink enough fluids and include protein in each meal for 2–3 days.

Helpful habits

  • Warm up for 5–10 minutes before exercise and cool down after.
  • Increase workout intensity gradually — by about 10% a week.
  • Sleep 7–8 hours; muscles repair during sleep.

Precautions

  • Hot baths aren't advised in pregnancy; use a warm (not hot) shower instead, and check exercise plans with your doctor. Children should rest and hydrate; see a doctor for severe or persistent pain.
  • Painkillers can affect the kidneys and interact with BP and blood-thinning medicines — use them only as advised.
  • Seek urgent care for extreme muscle pain with weakness, swelling or dark cola-coloured urine after intense exercise — it can signal rhabdomyolysis. See a doctor for pain that lasts more than a week or a sudden 'pop' with swelling.
