Home remedies for tonsillitis: salt–turmeric gargles, warm soups and voice rest

Red, swollen tonsils make swallowing painful and often come with fever and tiredness. These home remedies for tonsillitis — warm salt and turmeric gargles several times a day, honey in warm water, soft warm foods and resting the voice — ease the soreness while the infection settles, and help you spot when a doctor is needed.

Illustrated still life with turmeric root, honey, fresh ginger, ice.

Home remedies for tonsillitis: viral or bacterial?

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils at the back of the throat. Most cases are viral and improve in a week. Some are caused by streptococcus bacteria, which need antibiotics to prevent complications — white patches, high fever, swollen neck glands and no cough can point to strep, but only a doctor can decide.

In Ayurveda, tonsil swelling is described as tundikeri and treated with gargles (kavala), warm, light food and avoiding cold, heavy and sour items.

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon turmeric in a glass of warm water
  • 1 teaspoon honey (for adults and children over 1)
  • Warm soups, dal, khichdi, soft idli
  • Tulsi or ginger tea

How to prepare

  1. Dissolve salt and turmeric in warm water just before gargling.

How to use

  • Gargle for 30 seconds, 3–4 times a day, and spit out.
  • Sip honey in warm water or tulsi–ginger tea through the day.
  • Choose soft, warm foods; avoid very hot, spicy, sour and fried food.
  • Rest your voice and sleep well.

Helpful habits

  • Replace your toothbrush after the infection clears.
  • Don't share cups and utensils while unwell.
  • Drink enough fluids even if swallowing hurts.

Precautions

  • Only older children who can gargle safely (usually over 6) should gargle; never give honey to babies under 1.
  • Pregnant women with fever and sore throat should see a doctor early.
  • If you are prescribed antibiotics, finish the full course even when you feel better. Ask before combining herbal remedies with medicines.
  • Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, drooling or inability to swallow saliva, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, a stiff neck or high fever. See a doctor for tonsillitis that recurs often.
