Pomegranate Peel Tea for Mild Loose Motions

A light tea of dried anar peel, a traditional astringent remedy for mild loose stools in adults, alongside ORS and rest.

Illustrated still life with pomegranate.

Using pomegranate sensibly at home

Anar (pomegranate) is valued in Ayurveda for both fruit and peel. The dried peel is astringent and has a long folk use for loose stools.

Pomegranate peel is rich in tannins, which have an astringent, drying effect. Folk medicine across India uses a weak peel tea for mild diarrhoea. The most important treatment is still fluids: ORS, rice kanji, coconut water.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp dried pomegranate peel pieces
  • 2 cups water

How to prepare

  1. Simmer the peel in water for 10 minutes until it turns light brown.
  2. Strain and cool to warm.

How to use

  • Sip half a cup two or three times on the day of loose stools.
  • Keep drinking ORS and light food.

Helpful habits

  • Wash and sun-dry peels; store them in a jar.

Precautions

  • See a doctor for blood in stools, high fever, signs of dehydration or diarrhoea over two days.
  • Use peel only for a day or two; it is strongly astringent.
  • If you take regular medicines or have a long-term condition, check with your doctor first.
