What to know about saunf

Saunf (fennel) is sweet, fragrant and cooling. It is chewed after meals across India and brewed into a mild tea for gas and heaviness.

Fennel is one of the most common household remedies for gas in India. For children, keep it weak and in small amounts. Concentrated fennel oil and seed extracts are not suitable for babies.

Ingredients

  • ½ tsp saunf
  • 1 cup water

How to prepare

  1. Boil saunf in water for two minutes; strain and cool to lukewarm.

How to use

  • Give two to four teaspoons after meals, up to twice a day, for children over two.

Helpful habits

  • Choose green, plump seeds; dull brown ones are old.

Precautions

  • Not for babies without a paediatrician's advice. See a doctor for persistent tummy pain, vomiting or weight loss.
  • Very large amounts are not advised in pregnancy.
  • For babies and children under five, ask the paediatrician first.
  • A home remedy, not a treatment. See a doctor if symptoms last more than a few days or get worse.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add sugar?

A tiny pinch of mishri is fine for older children.

What about gripe water?

Ask your paediatrician; many contain sugar or other ingredients.

Sugar-coated saunf or plain?

Plain or lightly roasted saunf is better; coated versions add sugar and colour.
