Steamed Mashed Apple for a Child

A peeled apple is steamed until soft and mashed for a child who already eats fruit. Do not add honey. This is not medical advice and not a treatment for cough or constipation.

A small bowl of pale steamed mashed apple with a peeler and a cinnamon stick on a wooden board. No honey.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

A peeled apple, steamed and mashed, with no honey

A peeled apple steamed over a little water until a spoon mashes it is a soft fruit bowl for a child who already eats cooked fruit. A very small pinch of cinnamon can go in if the child already tolerates it. There is no honey in the bowl, not even to sweeten a tart apple. It is ordinary food, not medical advice, and not a treatment for cough, constipation, fever, or a poor appetite.

Do not give it to a baby under six months, and do not offer it as a first food you decided alone. Sit with the child and mash out any firm bit. If the child is wheezing, not drinking, or has a cough that is lasting, see a doctor instead of adding more apple.

Ingredients

  • 1 apple, peeled and cored
  • A little water in the steamer pan
  • A very small pinch of cinnamon, only if it already suits the child

How to prepare

  1. Peel and core the apple, cut it into pieces, and steam it over a little water until fully soft.
  2. Mash it smooth. Add cinnamon only as a very small pinch if the child already eats it. Do not add honey.

How to use

  • Offer a small bowl to a child who already eats soft fruit.
  • Serve it lukewarm, and stay nearby while the child eats.
  • One small bowl is enough. It is a snack, not a medicine.

Helpful habits

  • Check the mash with a clean spoon so no firm chunk remains.
  • Skip cinnamon if you are unsure the child has had it before.

Precautions

  • This is not medical advice. Do not add honey.
  • Not for babies under six months, and not a treatment for cough, constipation, or fever.
