Thin Moong Water for an Older Child
The thin water from well-cooked moong dal, salted very lightly, is for an older child with a small appetite. Moong water is not for babies under six months. This is not medical advice. Do not add honey.

Moong water for an older child, never under six months
Moong dal cooked until it is very soft gives off a thin watery part. That water, with only a tiny pinch of salt and a hint of cumin, can be offered to an older child who already eats family food and is eating less than usual. It is a plain sip beside food. It is not medical advice, not oral rehydration, and not a treatment for diarrhoea, fever, or poor growth.
Moong water is not for babies under six months. Do not put it in a bottle for a young baby, and do not add honey. A child who is very thirsty, passing little urine, vomiting, limp, or breathing hard needs a doctor quickly. Do not wait on another cup of dal water.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons moong dal
- A pinch of cumin
- Water to cook the dal very soft
- A tiny pinch of salt
How to prepare

- Pour off a small cup of the thin watery part and stir in only a tiny pinch of salt. Do not add honey.
How to use

Helpful habits
- The dal itself, well mashed, can be the food. The water is only the thin part, not a large salty bowl.
- Salt stays a tiny pinch. The cup should not taste like namkeen.
