Triphala Face Rinse for Oily Skin

A cooled, strained triphala decoction used as a final face rinse a few times a week for oily, acne-prone skin.

Illustrated Ayurvedic kitchen still life with a bowl, glass and traditional utensils.

The Ayurvedic view of triphala

Triphala is a classic blend of three dried fruits: amla, haritaki and bibhitaki. It is best known as a gentle bowel and digestion support, taken in small amounts.

Triphala is astringent, which gives oily skin a tighter, less greasy feel. A weak, well-strained decoction used as a rinse after cleansing is the traditional way.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp triphala churna
  • 2 cups water

How to prepare

  1. Simmer triphala in water for five minutes; cool and strain through a fine cloth.

How to use

  • After washing your face, splash with the triphala water and pat dry.
  • Use three times a week; make fresh each time.

Helpful habits

  • Store in an airtight jar away from steam; it clumps in moist air.

Precautions

  • Keep it out of the eyes.
  • It can loosen stools; avoid during diarrhoea and in pregnancy.
  • Patch-test on the inner arm 24 hours before using on the face.
  • A home remedy, not a treatment. See a doctor if symptoms last more than a few days or get worse.

Frequently asked questions

Can I store the rinse?

Use it the same day; it spoils.

Does it help acne?

It may reduce oiliness; ongoing acne needs a dermatologist.

Does triphala cause dependence?

There is little evidence, but it is still best used in short spells, not forever.
