Ajwain Leaf (Patta) Tea for a Scratchy Throat

A couple of fresh Indian borage leaves steeped in hot water. A pleasant warm cup, not a treatment for infection.

A glass cup of pale green ajwain leaf tea on a saucer beside fresh fuzzy leaves and a bowl of honey.

A leaf from the pot by the window

Ajwain patta, or Indian borage, is a thick, fragrant leaf grown in pots in many homes, and it smells like carom seeds. Steeped in hot water it makes a pleasant warm cup. It is a home habit for a scratchy throat and not a treatment for cough or infection.

Use two or three leaves, washed well, and sip warm. Skip it in pregnancy, as the leaf is not well studied, and do not give it to babies. Persistent sore throat, fever or cough needs a doctor.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 fresh ajwain leaves
  • 1 cup hot water
  • A little honey (optional, not for babies)

How to prepare

  1. Wash the leaves and tear them lightly.
  2. Pour hot water over them in a cup.

How to use

  • Cover and steep for five minutes, strain and sip warm.
  • Have a cup once or twice a day for a day or two.

Helpful habits

  • Grow a pot on a sunny window; it needs little care.
  • Add honey only after the cup cools slightly.

Precautions

  • Skip it in pregnancy and for babies.
  • Honey is not for babies under one year.
  • Sore throat with fever or lasting days needs a doctor.
