Diluted Clove Oil Rub for Muscle Aches

Two or three drops of clove oil in a spoon of coconut or sesame oil, massaged into aching muscles for a warming, mildly numbing effect.

Illustrated still life with cloves, sesame seeds, coconut.

Clove in everyday Indian homes

Laung (clove) is strongly aromatic and slightly numbing, which is why it has a long history in toothache and throat remedies.

Clove oil contains eugenol, which has mild numbing and warming properties. Many Indian pain balms contain clove. Diluting it properly is essential, as neat clove oil can burn the skin.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 drops clove oil
  • 1 tbsp coconut or sesame oil

How to prepare

  1. Mix clove oil thoroughly into the carrier oil.

How to use

  • Massage into sore muscles once or twice a day.
  • Wash hands afterwards and keep away from eyes.

Helpful habits

  • Good cloves are oily and release oil when pressed with a nail.

Precautions

  • Never apply undiluted. Not for children under six or on broken skin. Stop if the skin burns or turns red.
  • Never put undiluted clove oil on gums or skin; it can burn.
  • Keep clove oil away from children.
  • A home remedy, not a treatment. See a doctor if symptoms last more than a few days or get worse.
