Five Minutes of Anulom Vilom
Five quiet minutes of alternate-nostril breathing, without force and without breath holding. Skip it if you are very breathless. Anulom vilom does not replace asthma care.

Five minutes of anulom vilom, only while calm
Anulom vilom here is slow breathing through one nostril at a time. Sit upright, close the right nostril and breathe in through the left, then switch and breathe out through the right, then in through the right, and switch again. No need to hold the breath. No need to make a sound. Five minutes is the whole session.
Skip this if you are very breathless, wheezing, or in an asthma flare. It does not replace inhalers, medicines, or a plan from a doctor. Stop at once if you feel faint, tight in the chest, or desperate for air. A blocked nose is a reason to skip, not to force air through.
Ingredients
- A glass of water for after the five minutes
- A chair or cushion to sit upright
- A timer set for five minutes
How to prepare
- Sit upright where the air is fresh. Loosen the shoulders and keep water nearby, but do not sip during the practice.
- If the nose is blocked or you already feel short of breath, do not start.
How to use
- Close the right nostril, breathe in gently through the left, then close the left and breathe out through the right.
- Breathe in through the right, switch, and breathe out through the left. Continue this easy pattern.
- Stop at five minutes, or earlier if the breath stops feeling easy, then take a normal sip of water if you want.
Helpful habits
- A softer breath counts more than a longer one. Do not compete with a count you saw online.
- The same five minutes most days is plenty. Do not stack rounds until you gasp.
Precautions
- Skip anulom vilom if you are very breathless. It does not replace asthma care, inhalers, or emergency help.
- Do not hold the breath, and stop if you feel faint, dizzy, or tight in the chest.
- This practice does not treat anxiety disorders, blood pressure, or lung disease.
