Hold the Page About a Forearm Away

Hold a book or paper about a forearm's length from your face, with a lamp rather than a glare. It is a reading habit. Nothing goes into the eye, and it does not replace glasses.

An open book, eyeglasses and a ruler on a wooden desk by a window with a lamp.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Distance and a lamp, not a drop

If you read on paper, keep the page roughly a forearm away and light it with a lamp from the side, not with a bright glare into the eyes. Blink now and then. This does not cancel a glasses prescription, does not treat eye disease, and is not a reason to put rose water, oil, or any kitchen liquid into the eye.

If you already wear reading glasses, wear them as prescribed instead of pushing the page oddly close. Headache, doubling, sudden blur, or a painful red eye needs an eye doctor. This habit is a pause in how you hold a page. It is not a cure.

Ingredients

  • A paper page or book
  • A lamp that does not shine straight into the eyes
  • Your usual reading glasses, if you have them

How to prepare

  1. Sit so the lamp lights the page from the side.
  2. Rest the book about a forearm away, not against the nose.

How to use

  • Read for a while at that distance, and blink.
  • Stop if the words double or the head starts to ache.
  • Do not put any liquid into the eye before or after.

Helpful habits

  • A larger print is a fair change if small print forces the page too close.
  • Screens still need their own breaks. This page is about paper distance.

Precautions

  • Does not replace glasses or an eye test.
  • Nothing goes into the eye.
  • Sudden blur, a curtain over the sight, or a painful red eye needs an eye doctor.

Frequently asked questions

If I hold the book closer, will my eyes get stronger?

No. Forcing the page very close is not training. Use the distance that lets you read without strain, and use prescribed glasses.

Can I add rose water drops to help the habit?

No. Nothing from the kitchen goes into the eye. The habit is only how you hold and light the page.

The words suddenly went missing in one patch. Should I keep reading?

No. Stop and see an eye doctor the same day. A missing patch or a curtain over the sight is not a reading-posture problem.
