Giloy and Blood Sugar: What to Know

Giloy is often suggested for diabetes. What research shows, the liver safety reports, and how to discuss it with your doctor.

Illustrated still life with ice.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Why giloy is used this way

Giloy (guduchi) is a climbing vine whose stem is boiled into kadha. It became very popular after 2020, and doctors have since reported liver problems in some people taking it for long periods or in strong doses.

Giloy (guduchi) has shown sugar-lowering effects in animal studies and is used in Ayurvedic formulas for prameha. Human trials are few and small. Since 2020 there have also been case reports of liver injury in people taking giloy, especially long-term or in autoimmune conditions.

That does not mean giloy is dangerous for everyone, but it should not be a casual daily drink for diabetes.

Ingredients

  • Giloy only as prescribed (stem, ghanvati or juice from a licensed brand)

How to use

  • If prescribed, use a defined course and recheck liver tests.
  • Keep your diabetes medicine and diet plan unchanged unless your doctor says otherwise.

Helpful habits

  • Use stem from a known source; giloy is sometimes confused with look-alike vines.

Precautions

  • Stop and see a doctor for yellow eyes, dark urine, itching or tiredness. Avoid with autoimmune disease unless a specialist agrees.
  • Do not take daily for weeks without a doctor; long courses have been linked to liver injury in some people.
  • Avoid in pregnancy, autoimmune disease and with diabetes medicine unless a doctor advises.
  • Keep checking your sugar; tell your doctor before adding this, as medicine doses may need review.
  • If you take regular medicines or have a long-term condition, check with your doctor first.
