Home remedies for dizziness: sit down, sip water, eat something light and rise slowly

Feeling dizzy or light-headed (chakkar aana) is common and often linked to standing up fast, skipping meals, heat or not drinking enough. These home remedies for dizziness help you steady yourself safely: sit or lie down straight away, sip water or ORS, eat something light, breathe slowly and get up gradually.

A glass of water with lemon, a small bowl of dates, a banana and a soft pillow on a calm background

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Common causes of dizziness

Dizziness can mean light-headedness (feeling faint) or vertigo (the room spinning). Light-headedness often comes from dehydration, low blood sugar, low BP, anaemia, heat or anxiety. Vertigo is often due to inner-ear problems. Rarely, dizziness signals a stroke or heart problem, which needs emergency care.

In Indian homes, the first response to chakkar is usually to sit the person down, give nimbu pani or glucose water and let them rest in a cool place.
