Home remedies for swelling in feet: elevation, less salt, ankle pumps and a warm soak

Puffy feet and ankles at the end of a long day, a journey or in hot weather are common, especially with age or in pregnancy. These home remedies for swelling in feet — raising your legs, cutting down on salt, ankle pump exercises, walking breaks and a lukewarm foot soak — help fluid move back up, while you watch for signs that need medical attention.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Home remedies for swelling in feet: common and serious causes

Gravity pulls fluid into the feet when you sit or stand for long. Heat, salty food, long flights, pregnancy, weight gain and some medicines (such as certain BP drugs, steroids and painkillers) make it worse. But swelling can also be a sign of heart, kidney, liver or vein problems, or a blood clot — which is why this remedy carries a doctor note.

Ayurveda calls swelling shotha and links it with kapha and weak circulation; light, low-salt meals, barley water and gentle movement are traditional supports.

Ingredients

  • Pillows for elevation
  • A tub of lukewarm water with 2 tablespoons rock salt
  • Barley water (optional): 2 tablespoons barley boiled in 4 cups of water and strained

How to prepare

  1. Prepare barley water fresh daily and let it cool to room temperature.

How to use

  • Lie down with your feet raised above heart level on pillows for 20 minutes, 2–3 times a day.
  • Do ankle pumps — point and flex your feet 20 times — every hour when sitting.
  • Take a 5-minute walk every hour on long workdays or journeys.
  • Soak feet in lukewarm salt water for 10–15 minutes in the evening.

Helpful habits

  • Cut down on pickles, papad, namkeen, packaged foods and extra table salt.
  • Drink enough water unless your doctor has limited fluids.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; ask your doctor about compression stockings.

Precautions

  • Continue prescribed treatment, and don't stop BP or other medicines even if you suspect they cause swelling — ask your doctor.
  • Mild foot swelling is common in pregnancy, but sudden swelling of the face, hands or feet with headache or blurred vision can signal pre-eclampsia — seek care immediately. Swelling in children needs a doctor's check.
  • People with diabetes should check water temperature carefully and inspect feet daily.
  • Seek urgent care for swelling in one leg with pain, warmth or redness (possible clot), swelling with breathlessness or chest pain, or rapidly increasing swelling. See a doctor for swelling that lasts more than a few days.
