Fresh Grated Turmeric in Warm Milk

A small piece of raw turmeric grated into warm milk with a crack of pepper as a milder, fresher haldi doodh. Not with gallstones or blood-thinning medicine without a doctor's say.

A glass of golden turmeric milk beside fresh turmeric roots, peppercorns and a small grater.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Haldi doodh, made with the root

Raw turmeric is in the markets in winter, and grating a small piece into warm milk gives a milder, fresher haldi doodh than the powder. Many people find the warm milk comforting at night in cold weather. It is a comfort drink and not a treatment for colds, pain or inflammation.

Use a piece of about a centimetre, since too much turns the milk bitter and strong. Add a crack of black pepper if you like. Skip it with gallstones, or if you are on blood thinners without asking your doctor, and in pregnancy in large amounts. Stop if it upsets your stomach.

Ingredients

  • 1 cm piece of fresh turmeric root
  • 1 cup milk
  • A crack of black pepper and a little jaggery (optional)

How to prepare

  1. Grate the turmeric finely.
  2. Warm the milk with the turmeric for three minutes without letting it boil over, and strain if you like.

How to use

  • Sip warm in the evening, once or twice a week or as you like.
  • Do not exceed a cup a day.

Helpful habits

  • Wear gloves while grating to avoid stains.
  • Strain it if you do not like the bits.

Precautions

  • Ask a doctor first with gallstones, blood thinners or before surgery.
  • Keep the turmeric small, and stop if it upsets your stomach.
  • A comfort drink, not a treatment.
