Diluted Kalonji Oil Knee Rub

A few drops of kalonji (black seed) oil mixed into coconut or sesame oil and massaged into sore knees, a popular home rub.

What to know about kalonji

Kalonji (nigella seeds) are small, black and slightly bitter, used on naan and in pickles. They are studied for many uses, but evidence in people is still early.

A small trial in women with knee osteoarthritis found topical Nigella sativa oil eased pain compared with paracetamol over a few weeks. It is a reasonable, low-risk addition to exercise and weight management.

Ingredients

  • ½ tsp kalonji oil
  • 2 tsp sesame or coconut oil

How to prepare

  1. Mix the oils in a small bowl and warm slightly.

How to use

  • Massage into the knee for five minutes, twice a day.
  • Combine with quadriceps strengthening exercises.

  • Lightly toasting kalonji brings out its onion-like aroma.

Precautions

  • Patch test first; kalonji oil can cause skin irritation. Stop if a rash appears.
  • Large amounts may lower sugar and BP; take care with those medicines and in pregnancy.
  • If you take regular medicines or have a long-term condition, check with your doctor first.
