Light lauki (bottle gourd) soup for a heart-friendly diet

Bottle gourd is one of the lightest, most cooling vegetables in the Ayurvedic kitchen. A low-salt lauki soup is a simple, satisfying dish for anyone following a heart-healthy, BP-conscious diet. It is food, not a treatment.

Illustrated still life with cumin seeds, fresh ginger, coriander seeds.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups peeled, cubed lauki (bottle gourd)
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds; 1 teaspoon ghee or oil
  • A small piece of ginger; a pinch of black pepper
  • Fresh coriander; salt only as your doctor allows

How to prepare

  1. Taste a small piece of raw lauki first — if it is bitter, discard it (see precautions).
  2. Heat ghee, add cumin and ginger, then the lauki and 1½ cups water. Cook until soft (about 10 minutes).
  3. Blend smooth, season with pepper and a little salt, and garnish with coriander.

How to use

  • Have a bowl as a light dinner or starter a few times a week.
  • Pair with regular walks, less packaged food, and stress management.

Precautions

  • Keep taking your prescribed BP or heart medicine and check your blood pressure regularly. Consult your doctor before changing your diet or adding supplements.
  • Never eat or drink bitter-tasting lauki or its juice — bitter bottle gourd can be toxic and has caused serious illness.
  • Chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache or sudden weakness are emergencies — call for help immediately.
