Methi Seed Tea for Period Cramps

A warm tea of lightly crushed fenugreek seeds sipped in the first days of your period, a traditional remedy with some small-study support.

Illustrated still life with fenugreek seeds, jaggery.

The Ayurvedic view of methi

Methi (fenugreek) seeds are bitter and rich in soluble fibre that turns slippery in water. They are used in food, hair packs and, with medical guidance, as part of blood-sugar diets.

A small trial among Iranian students found fenugreek seed powder reduced period pain compared with placebo. A warm methi tea is an easy kitchen version, best combined with a hot water bag and rest.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp methi seeds, lightly crushed
  • 1½ cups water
  • A little jaggery (optional)

How to prepare

  1. Simmer methi seeds for five to seven minutes; strain and sweeten lightly.

How to use

  • Sip warm once or twice a day for the first two days of your period.

Helpful habits

  • Lightly roasting methi seeds reduces bitterness.

Precautions

  • Avoid if you could be pregnant. Very painful periods need a gynaecologist's check for causes such as endometriosis.
  • Can lower blood sugar; check with your doctor if you take diabetes medicine.
  • Avoid large amounts in pregnancy.
  • In pregnancy or while breastfeeding, check with your doctor first.
  • Traditional use; scientific evidence is limited. Do not stop prescribed medicine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine it with a painkiller?

Yes, it is a kitchen tea; follow your doctor's advice on painkillers.

Will it make my period heavier?

Kitchen amounts are unlikely to; stop if you notice a change.

Why does sweat smell of maple after methi?

A natural compound in methi causes it; it is harmless.
