Warm ragi porridge on period days
Ragi flour cooked with milk or water and a little jaggery makes a warm porridge on period days. It is food. It is not a treatment for heavy bleeding.

Ragi porridge as period-day food
Ragi porridge is a soft breakfast in many southern kitchens. On period days the same bowl, warm and only lightly sweet, is simply something easy to eat when the appetite is uneven. A little jaggery is for taste. It does not treat bleeding, and it does not replace a meal plan from a doctor.
Eat it as food. Heavy bleeding, clots that worry you, dizziness, or pain that stops you walking need a doctor, not a thicker porridge. If milk does not suit you, cook the ragi in water. If jaggery is not for you, leave the bowl plain.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons ragi flour
- A small piece of jaggery
- A cup of milk, or water if you do not take milk
- A little extra water to loosen the porridge
How to prepare
- Mix the ragi flour with enough water to make a smooth paste, then stir it into the milk or water in a pan.
- Cook on a low flame, stirring, until it thickens. Melt the small piece of jaggery in at the end, or leave it out.
How to use
- Eat one warm bowl on a period day as breakfast or a snack.
- Sit down and eat it as food, not as a treatment.
- If you are still hungry, add your usual meal. Do not live on porridge alone.
Helpful habits
- Stir well at the start so the flour does not form lumps.
- A pinch of cardamom is enough fragrance if you want it. Do not add a large amount of ghee and jaggery together.
Precautions
- This porridge is food, not a treatment for heavy bleeding.
- Very heavy bleeding, dizziness, or fainting needs a doctor, not another bowl.
- Skip milk if dairy upsets you, and keep the jaggery small if you limit sweets.
