Slow Ankle Circles While You Are Seated

Sit, and circle each ankle slowly a few times if it feels comfortable. Stop if it hurts. It is a small movement, not a treatment for a clot, swelling, or joint disease.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

A few slow circles, and only if they are easy

Sitting in a chair, lift one foot just clear of the floor and draw a slow circle with the toes, one way and then the other, a few times. Repeat on the other foot if that also feels easy. This is a break from stillness. It does not treat arthritis, a sprain, varicose veins, or a clot.

Stop at once if there is pain. Do not circle an ankle that is hot, red, or newly swollen. If one calf is hot, hard, or swollen, or you are breathless or have chest pain, see a doctor urgently and do not exercise that leg. This page is not physiotherapy and not a reason to skip a prescribed exercise plan.

Ingredients

  • A sturdy chair
  • Bare feet or loose socks
  • A few quiet minutes

How to prepare

  1. Sit with both feet flat. Check that the chair does not roll.
  2. Lift one foot only a little. You should not strain the hip or hold your breath.

How to use

  • Draw a few slow circles each way with the toes.
  • Change feet if the second ankle is comfortable.
  • Stop at the first pain. Do not push through it.

Helpful habits

  • Small circles count. Large fast swings are not better.
  • If standing is unsteady, stay seated. Do not do this on one leg while standing.

Precautions

  • Stop if it hurts. Not for a hot, red, or newly swollen ankle.
  • A hot swollen calf, breathlessness, or chest pain needs urgent care. Do not rub or exercise that leg.
  • Not a treatment for joint disease, a sprain, or a clot.

Frequently asked questions

Can I circle a hot swollen ankle to bring it down?

No. A hot, red, or newly swollen joint should be seen, not exercised. Stop and ask a doctor.

One calf is swollen and hot. Should I circle that side more?

No. Do not exercise or massage that leg. Breathlessness, chest pain, or a hot swollen calf needs urgent medical care.

How many circles make it a treatment?

None. A few easy circles are a movement break. They are not a dose and not a treatment.
