Ashwagandha Bala Oil Massage for Tired Muscles and Joints

A warm massage with ashwagandha bala taila, a classical Ayurvedic oil, for tired muscles and stiff joints. External use only.

Illustrated still life with ashwagandha root, a folded cloth.

Using ashwagandha sensibly at home

Ashwagandha is a root that Ayurveda places among rasayanas, herbs taken to support strength and calm. Some small studies suggest it may help with stress and sleep, but it is a real herb with real side effects, not a daily vitamin.

Ashwagandha bala lakshadi taila and similar oils are used in Ayurvedic abhyanga for vata conditions, weakness and stiffness. Applied externally, these oils are generally safe; most of the benefit comes from regular warm massage.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 tsp ashwagandha bala taila (or bala taila)
  • A warm towel

How to prepare

  1. Warm the oil by standing the bottle in hot water.
  2. Massage into the muscles and around joints with long strokes on limbs and circles on joints.

How to use

  • Leave for 20 to 30 minutes, then take a warm bath.
  • Repeat two or three times a week.

Helpful habits

  • Buy root powder from a brand that lists the plant part and a batch number.
