A chilled drink of fresh coriander, mint, lemon, roasted jeera and a pinch of black salt, a refreshing low-sugar alternative to packaged drinks in summer.

Illustrated still life with coriander seeds, lemon, cumin seeds, rock salt, mint leaves.

What to know about dhania

Dhania (coriander) seeds and leaves are mild and cooling. Seed water is a traditional summer drink for heat and acidity, and fresh leaves go into chutneys.

Coriander and mint are classic cooling herbs in Ayurveda. Blended with lemon, roasted jeera and black salt, they make a savoury cooler similar to jaljeera, helping you drink more water on hot days.

Ingredients

  • A handful each of fresh coriander and mint
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • ½ tsp roasted jeera powder
  • A pinch of black salt
  • 2 glasses chilled water

How to prepare

  1. Blend the herbs with a little water; strain.
  2. Mix with lemon, jeera, black salt and the rest of the water.

How to use

  • Sip in the afternoon on hot days.
  • Make fresh and drink within a few hours.

Helpful habits

  • Lightly crush seeds before soaking so they release more flavour.

Precautions

  • People on low-salt diets should skip the black salt. Wash herbs thoroughly.

  • If you take regular medicines or have a long-term condition, check with your doctor first.
