Home remedies for summer fatigue: aam panna, sattu, coconut water, cooling foods and a midday break

Hot Indian summers can leave you drained, sleepy and unable to focus. These home remedies for summer fatigue restore energy with traditional cooling drinks — aam panna, sattu, coconut water and buttermilk — water-rich fruits, lighter meals and a short rest during the hottest hours.

Why heat makes us tired

In heat, the body works hard to cool itself through sweating, losing water and salts. Poor sleep on hot nights, heavy meals and dehydration add to tiredness. Heat exhaustion, and in severe cases heat stroke, are real risks.

Ayurveda's grishma ritucharya recommends sweet, cooling, liquid foods, less spicy and salty food, and rest during the hottest part of the day.

Ingredients

  • Aam panna: 1 raw mango, jaggery, roasted jeera, black salt, mint
  • Sattu, coconut water, buttermilk
  • Watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon

How to prepare

  1. Boil or roast the raw mango, scoop the pulp, blend with water, a little jaggery, roasted jeera, black salt and mint.
  2. Keep a jug of buttermilk or lemon water in the fridge.

How to use

  • Have a glass of aam panna or sattu drink in the late morning.
  • Sip coconut water or buttermilk in the afternoon.
  • Eat light meals with curd rice, dal, seasonal vegetables and fruits; rest for 20–30 minutes after lunch.

Helpful habits

  • Avoid going out between noon and 4 pm when possible; cover your head.
  • Wear light, loose cotton clothes.
  • Take a cool shower before bed for better sleep.

Precautions

  • Aam panna and sweetened drinks contain sugar — people with diabetes should limit them.
  • Seek urgent care for confusion, very high body temperature, fainting, no sweating with hot dry skin, or vomiting — possible heat stroke.
  • See a doctor if tiredness persists after the weather cools.
